Before 1977, all snus was sold as loose snus. A portion had to be formed, which meant the portions were inconsistent in size and fingers got dirty. Things changed when Tre Ankare (meaning three anchors) was launched by Swedish Match.
By introducing the small portion pouches, Tre Ankare changed the snus world forever. It was the first Portion Snus on the market and it lay down the foundation for all Portion Snus that Swedish Match produces today.
Today, Tre Ankare is available as White Portion only but the flavor stayed the same as 40 year ago. Opening a can of Tre Ankare reveals a neatly-packed circle of 24 snus pouches in what Swedish Match calls the Star Formation ®, inviting the snus user to pick out a pouch and place it in the lip.
The can is designed very traditionally, showing three anchors on the lid. The original look from 1977 has only undergone minute changes.
The smell that develops quickly fills the nose with a mellow tobacco aroma, some subtle sweetness and herbal undertones. After placing a pouch in the mouth, flavor develops quickly and confirms what the smell hinted at: A strong focus on tobacco. The tobacco is of medium strength and strikes a good balance between mellow, earthy tones known from more mellow snus and the bold characteristics of strong snus known to lovers of intense tobacco. The tobacco notes are rounded off by a subtle sweetness. Hints of herbs and smoky undertones accentuate the flavor.
Over all, "the mother of all Portion Snus“, as the brand is nicknamed, is versatile and will delight many different snus lovers with its balanced flavor. That’s the reason the snus has survived over 40 years in the competitive snus market and is still loved by many snus fans
